The English Department Sixth-grade Summer Reading List
Clinton Christian School
Mrs. C. Mayo
Dear Sixth Grade Student,
Welcome to the language arts program at Clinton Christian School! I would like to help you better succeed by providing you with some pre-reading, during-reading and post (after) reading strategies for this year's Summer Reading List. At the end of this letter, you will find a study guide that includes the following materials:
This year, students will be required to read 3 books in Middle School.
This information is designed to guide you through your reading of the three novels:Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor (2000 or 2002) Hudson Taylor: Deep in the Heart of China by Janet and Geoff Benge and introduce you to some of the strategies that will help you be more successful readers.
Students will have a choice for the third book. The list is provided.
Because we will be working with the books when you first come to school, we ask that you keep your copy of the books until we are finished with them. You will have a test for the one book and a book report for the other. Also, and it would be helpful if you had the books available to review and study.
Reading a book and watching a film are two completely different experiences. Don’t be deceived into thinking you know the story just from the movie. Books are much more detailed and often differ greatly from their film versions. Read the book before seeing the movie. Then you can intelligently observe the changes. Both books are available on www.christianbook.com and www.amazon.com.
Please choose one of these books for your third choice:
-Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back
By:Todd Burpo, Lynn Vincent
-A Girl After God's Own Heart: A Tween Adventure with God
By:Elizabeth George
-Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board
By:Bethany Hamilton,Sheryl Berk,Rick Bundschuh
-Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
-The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
-Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
-The Call of the Wild by Jack London
-Their Eyes are Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
I hope you enjoy these wonderful books, and I look forward to meeting you in the fall.

Hello 6th Graders......
While you are walking on this Pathway through Middle School, you will experience JOY, GROWTH, AND CHALLENGES. The great news is.....you have your parents, mentors, Mrs. Pablo, and Mrs. Mayo as your personal guides.
- If you stay on the path, you will endure to the end and grow academically, emotionally, and spiritually.
- If you take the short cut and stray for a minute, you still have time to refocus and rejoin the group.
- If you take the short cut and never return, you will get lost and have to deal with some unnecessary consequences.
- Watch Your Connections!!
How Can Students Improve Their Grades, Conduct, and/or Study Habits in the Second Quarter? Mrs. Pablo and Mrs. Mayo have given you several ways, but maybe some students need to hear it from their peers. Send me your procedures, helps, and tips so that everyone can improve. No one will be left "on the side of the road" unless you want to be there.

I didn't get any zeros this week because I first I always copy my homework after I settle down in Mrs. Mayo's classroom (which takes only about a minute). When I get home I do my homework and check or scratch out the subject that I have completed. After I'm done, I pack my bag and leave it by the front door. In the morning, when we are about to leave I check if I have everything. Once I finish checking if I have everything, I'm on my way to school!!!-Nia Hayes
Dear fellow classmates,
1. When I got to school, I wrote down my homework.
2. When I got home, I looked at my homework book and start doing everything it said.
3. I didn't treat my work like it was buffet homework.
4. I put all my loose homework in a folder so it won't get lost.
5. When I got to school, I just took my homework write out of my folder.
6. I followed that same process and before I knew it I had my homework completed for 4 ENTIRE DAYS.
7. I can promise you that if you follow these five easy steps you will have your homework every day.
Your soon to be treasurer, Mikayla Humes

When I get to school I unpack and then I write down my homework. Then when it’s time for Mrs. Mayo class I get ready and then I write down my homeworkk . When I get home I eat a snack. Then I start my homework. Then even though I study during study hall I review what I learned. I get my parents to check over my homework. Then when I finished everything I might play a game. When I wake up the next morning I make sure to check my backpack again.
